About

Nicodemus, born Cecil Wellington in Jamaica in 1957, was a pioneering Jamaican dancehall deejay. He rose to prominence in the late 1970s through the Socialist Roots sound system and became known for his distinctive chanting style and ability to improvise lyrics on the spot. During the 1980s he recorded extensively and became associated with producers including Prince Jammy, later known as King Jammy. His recordings included “Boneman Connection,” and he later worked closely with Super Cat and the Wild Apache crew. Nicodemus became an influential figure in Jamaican dancehall, helping inspire younger deejays including Super Cat and Chaka Demus. He remained active into the 1990s and died in 1996 at the age of 39.
